Uttar Pradesh is India's fourth largest state covering about 9 per
cent of the total area of India and is the most populous state in
India. This holy-land of Ganga and Yamuna, and Chardham's - Badrinath,
Haridwar, Kedarnath and Rishikesh - where people come to discover
a past but end up with a future at last. It is a place of never-ending
history and unlimited legends. For instance the ghats at Varanasi
never fails to fascinate. The wonderful Taj Mahal and Mughal splendour
at Agra and Fatehpur Sikri, and the route to Nirvana at Sarnath. It
is a land over 100 holiday centres - hill stations, pilgrim centres,
wildlife sanctuaries and national parks, historical places and so many

land, gifted with rich natural wealth, has a very special significance
in our nation's politics. It has given maximum number of leaders to
our country in the post independence era. It is a land with diversifying
culture and heritage and symbol of secular character.
Agra is known for the magnificent Taj Mahal - one of the nine wonders
of the world. Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh has a Muslim cultural
centre and is known for its gardens and historic buildings and architecture.
Rishikesh is the place for Hindu Pilgrim, Ashrams and Temples. Mathura
is one of the seven sacred cities of Hindus, being the birthplace of
Lord Krishna. Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Rama is another one of
the seven sacred cities of the Hindus. Fatehpur Sikri, the capital city
during Akbar's rule, has many forts, palaces, mosques and tombs. Nainital,
Mussorie and Dehra Dun are the major hill resorts. They have beautiful
landscape gardens, fishing and trekking. Vrindavan, the town of a thousand
shrines, associated with Lord Krishna is also situated here. Other Hindu
places of pilgrimage situated here are Devprayag, Gangotri, Haridwar,
Kedarnath, Varanasi, Uttarkashi and Yamnotri. |
