Kerala, the land of
magic, is a narrow, fertile strip on the south-west coast of India,
sandwiched between the Lakshwadeep Sea and the Western Ghats. The
landscape is dominated by rice fields, mango and cashew nut trees and
coconut palms.
A land of lovely palm fringed wide sandy beaches and lush green
vegetation all over. A journey along Kerala's coast takes one through
sheets of tender green paddy fields, cardamom groves and slopping
plantations of tea and tapioca. Though this land of rivers and
backwaters, busy raising valuable cash crops like tea, rubber, cardamom,
coffee and cashew nut, it still lives the leisurely pace of ageless
craft plying in canals and backwaters. |

Kochin
(Cochin), with its wealth of historical associations and its beautiful
setting on a cluster of islands and narrow peninsulas, this
interesting city perfectly reflects the eclecticism of Kerala. The
palace here contains some of India's most beautiful murals. Another
must see is a performance of the world famous Kathakali dance drama.
The historical port of Calicut where Vasco-da-Gama landed is another
place of interest for visitors.

Kerala offers
one of the best beaches in the country at Kovalam and one of the finest
wildlife sanctuaries at Thekkady, the Periyar Wildlife sanctuary, the
home of a magnificent variety of tropical flora and fauna, a paradise
respondent in nature's glory. Some of the other places to be visited
are the hill stations of Munnar, Pirmed, Sultan's Battery and the cities,
Trivandrum and Trichur. Kerala is also
famous for its secular character where people of three major religions
co-exist. Temples, churches and mosques dots the State. There are Jewish
settlers and their synagogues too. A visit to this tiny fertile friendly
land will reveal a kaleidoscope of deep routed cultures, traditions
and delightful sensations. |
