The state
of Karnataka, formerly known as Mysore, is a state of strong contrasts,
with the modern, industrialized city of Bangalore at one extreme and
expanses of rural farming areas at the other. Karnataka also has some
of the most interesting historic architecture in India, and a varied
and tumultuous history. A land with abounding scenic beauty and charm,
is well known for lovely garden cities, ornate temples and historical
monuments. A changing pageant of cultures, customs, life-styles and
religions has left its mark on this land, making it a fascinating blend
of colours.

Bangalore
a modern, bustling city and an important industrial centre, remains
one of India's most pleasant cities. The central area is studded with
beautifully laid out parks and gardens, wide tree lined avenues, imposing
buildings and lively bazaars. The other attractions in the city are
its various temples, musuems and palaces. Nandi Hills, a hill station
on the north of Bangalore is a popular summer retreat which provides
a good view over the surrounding country. Mysore, City of Palaces, has
chosen to retain and promote its heritage offering a number of landscaped
gardens. One of its most popular attractions are the Brindavan Gardens
and the Mysore Palace. |

Karnataka
also offers a National Park and Tiger Reserve, Wildlife sanctuary at
Bandipur and the Bannerghatta National Park near Bangalore. Some of
the historical places to visit are Bijapur, Aivalli, Badami, Belgaum,
Belur, Chitradurga and Halebid wherein ancient forts, temples and especially
the Hoysala Sculpture and Architecture can be seen. The Kolar gold mines
at Kolar, beaches at Malpe, Karwar, Panambul and Ullal, and various
picnic spots at Jog Falls, Ghataprabha, Mundgod, Sivasamudram and Krishnarajasagara
will make your trip to Karnataka an unforgetable experience. |

developed State is famous for its handicrafts made of metal, stone,
sandalwood, rosewood, ivory and silk. The exotic sandalwood oil from
